The house seen above is a farmhouse in Italy that we have rented for seven nights in late September near a town called Citta di Castello. It is in northern Umbria, close to the border with Tuscany. The house has a large fireplace from the 1600s as well as artifacts related to the home's history. It overlooks a vineyard down into a valley.
But we start this trip in Ireland. We prefer to see more of smaller areas than less of larger areas, like we did in Costa Rica last year when we spent two weeks on the central/south Pacific coast, rather than wandering off towards the caribbean coast as well.
So after an overnight direct flight from Vancouver, we arrive in Dublin at 830am. We will meet up with Jenni's sister and her husband, pick up a rental car, and spend the first day in Dublin. Without much time there, we just plan to walk around the Guinness Storehouse, Temple Bar, and Trinity College areas just to get a feel for Dublin.
Then our first night will be at this B&B in Ballinascorney, southwest of Dublin.
The next morning we will head southwest towards Kilkenny. We much prefer back country roads to
highways so we will take the Old Military Road through the Wicklow mountains...
with a stop at Glendalough.
Working our way along an as yet undetermined route....maybe this road...
to Moonarch B&B in Callan, southwest of Kilkenny.
Then back to Dublin Airport for a flight to Venice.
Spending two nights at the Hotel Arlecchio...
Enjoying Venice and Burano.

Boarding an Italo train...

to Bologna, where we will rent a car to drive to our rented farmhouse in Citta di Castello. Avoiding highways, enjoying some Italian countryside and likely get very lost.
though the road signs appear to be easy enough to understand...
The farmhouse dining room, with its 16th century fireplace...
and kitchen...
and a wonderful spot for morning coffee...
From there, we will make day trips to places such as Gubbio...which has a rather interesting method of transportation to the Basilica of Sant' Ubaldo at the top of a local mountain...
enjoy the weekly market in Citta di Castello...
Visit San Marino, one of the world's oldest republics and perhaps the world's oldest country, and completely surrounded by Italy...
Ride the funicular in Orvieto...
or just enjoy the farmhouse...or any number of small medieval towns in Umbria.
We will then return the rental car to Bologna, where we will stay for 2 nights...
Bologna is known as "La Grasse"..."The Fat"....so the food will definitely be part of our sight-seeing there...
And then back to Dublin for one more night....
After 18 days in Ireland and Italy, it will be back home to Vancouver.
